“Our students love it! Every residency day, they are beside themselves. These are middle school kids, so it’s hard to get them excited about much.”

In a just a few hours, our friends at @tallerpr will open Kukuli Velarde's first major painting show in the United States, "The Complicit Eye." We've been fortunate to get to know Kukuli this fall as she's led our pilot creative aging class. Her work in the show deconstructs ideas of female beauty from colonization to the local barrio. Don't miss the reception tonight at Taller, beginning at 5:30.

Less than a month away and we are excited for our fourth annual Handmade + Philly Small Press Faire. Dec 8. Workshops and more info online at fleisher.org. Free entry and limited parking available.

Two incredible things happened in 1954: Peanut M&Ms hit the market and Louise Clement-Hoff began teaching at Fleisher. Both persist, but only one has had such a significant positive impact on artists young and old. In her 64 years of instruction, Louise has left an indelible mark on those who have been fortunate to have her as an instructor. On Friday, we're Louise will be one of 13 artistic icons celebrated as part of @brandywine_workshop’s The Final Print OUT. Make sure to stop by the Workshop (located at 728 S. Broad Street) beginning at 8:00 p.m. Friday to join the celebration.

Did you know that Fleisher is home to one of the few remaining community darkroom spaces in Philadelphia? As a bonus, Ahmed Salvador leads a 10-week course that focuses on the color process. Join him this winter on Mondays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and bring along your 35mm and medium format negatives. Learn more and register at http://bit.ly/2zLSOPR. (Thanks to Dominique Ellis for sharing this photograph with us!)

@casadei_giovanni just shared some of his newest still lifes to help brighten up this otherwise dreary day. Fleisher’s winter term, which begins in January, is a great time to learn from Giovanni. Grab a seat in his Alla Prima Still Life Oil Painting class, which meets on Mondays evenings this winter, at http://bit.ly/2T0AJq4.

In case you missed it, @darlajacksonsculpture will be taking over our 10-week Animal Sculpture this winter. Join her on Wednesdays, January 9-March 13, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and develop your three-dimensional vocabulary for animals. Register today at http://bit.ly/2zDpFXf.

Last week, our third-grade friends in Ms. Chan's class at Andrew Jackson School stopped by to visit the Dia de los Muertos ofrenda designed by @dos_tres_press. The class is currently in one of Fleisher's Community Partners in the Arts residencies, which pairs teaching artists with Philadelphia public school classrooms, community organizations, and social service agencies. Learn more about the program at fleisher.community and see the ofrenda before it comes down this weekend.

Before coming to tonight's Día de los Muertos vigil, which closes this year's series of events, read up on the intentions behind the altar installation designed by @dos_tres_press at http://bit.ly/2SEWlIG. With a theme of ofrenda de todos - or everybody’s altar - he aims to pay respects not only to the deceased friends and relatives of community collaborators, but also to those who are invisible or forgotten. The vigil begins at 6:00 p.m. and is one of your last chances to explore the installation.

Winter registration is in full swing today, which means adults can register for classes and workshops and parents/caregivers can register their young artists for our K-5 after-school program, Creative Labs. Register for one day or all five (and save 20 percent) and your young artist will explore visual art, movement, creative writing, and puppetry. Learn more and register at http://bit.ly/2zg3ZAm.
